Principal Investigator - SoilEvoEco Lab
Soil Biodiversity: Evolution, Phylogeny, and Biogeography of Soil Arthropods:
My research interests focus on the study of soil biodiversity, developing and applying new approaches based on high-throughput DNA sequencing for the study of phylogeny, biogeography, evolution, and ecology of soil-dwelling arthropod communities. The main goal is to enhance our understanding of the magnitude and distribution of this biodiversity, and of the eco-evolutionary processes involved in its generation and maintenance at both local and global scales. My work ranges from the methodological development of procedures necessary for the molecular study of hyperdiverse arthropod communities to the application of these methodologies to the study of ecological and evolutionary processes responsible for the generation, maintenance, and distribution of soil biodiversity.
Currently, my primary focus is on studying the soil (phylo)(beta)diversity of endogean arthropods based on high-throughput sequencing (HTS) approaches, with ongoing projects to characterize soil arthropod richness, biodiversity patterns and driving processes (i) in the Canary Islands (SoilBioDiv project) and (ii) for a selection of forest biomes worldwide (EdAFoBio project).
I am also particularly interested in the calibration of the molecular clock, as well as in the evolution and phylogeny of endogean lineages of Coleoptera, including Carabid beetles (Tribes Anillini and Zuphiini), among others. Furthermore, I am engaged in methods for species delineation and taxonomy by integrating multiple lines of evidence.

Academic path:
I earned my PhD from the University of Murcia in 2012. My doctoral research was centered on the molecular systematics, molecular clock calibration, and exploration of diversification and hybridisation processes within the subgenus Mesocarabus. This period also included significant work on the systematics of endogean Coleoptera and investigations into the ecology and evolution of aquatic beetles. In February 2013, I embarked on a postdoctoral fellowship at Imperial College London & the Natural History Museum of London, lasting 3.5 years. This phase of my career was marked by the development of a distinctive research trajectory, focusing on understanding the diversity and phylogenetic structure of complex, highly diverse biological communities. My emphasis was on soil arthropods, for which I developed and utilized innovative high throughput sequencing (HTS) techniques, alongside conducting studies on the evolution and phylogenetics of aquatic and subterranean Coleoptera.
In 2016, I transitioned to the CSIC in Tenerife, supported by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. During this time, I spearheaded a three-year project under the Spanish National Plan (JIN), investigating the impacts of insularity, vegetation types, aridity, and introduced species on the soil biodiversity of the Canary Islands. My career reached another milestone in 2022 when I was honored with a Ramón and Cajal contract, furthering my opportunity to advance my research areas and the activities of the SoilEvoEco Lab.
