LAB PHYLOSOPHY

We conduct high-quality science, emphasizing not only results but also the enjoyment of the process. We rely on the following pillars, and we expect all team members to contribute to them:

1

Rigurous work

2

Teamwork

3

Clear communication

4

Individualized mentorship

5

Respect, inclusivity, and a positive atmosphere

Primary responsibility: Generate scientific knowledge and professionals that impact our field of knowledge and society.

1 Ensure the fulfillment of objectives and deadlines for research and thesis projects.

2 Guarantee the well-being and proper functioning of team members: The team is the top priority. Commit to adapting to the uniqueness of each member and helping them achieve professional goals.

3 Define and sustain a system of organization and coordinated follow-up between both PIs that allows:

    • Monitor progress on objectives: assign responsibilities to each person, define a realistic plan, and resolve issues.
    • Ensure the training of members in data generation, analysis, interpretation, and communication of results: We won’t teach you everything, but we will guide you in the right direction to learn what you need.
    • Ensure the acquisition of other professional skills according to the training plan agreed upon with each member.

4 Foster motivation and direct communication among team members, with an open-door philosophy, an email system with CC for process and progress tracking, and a schedule of weekly (team organization), monthly (seminars), and quarterly (individual follow-up) meetings.

5 Ensure funds and spaces for all members to conduct high-quality science.

6 Review scientific publications to ensure the best quality in a timely manner: We want to review all documents before they are sent to take responsibility for their content.

7 Acknowledge the achievements of the members. We use a transparent system of authorship in publications and certification of mentorships.

  • We expect you to make an effort, but most importantly, we expect you to be effective and motivated in what you do. It’s essential to have a good balance between personal and professional life. First, you are people; second, you are scientists.
  • Take responsibility for your projects and general tasks, be proactive and creative.
  • Take responsibility for the progress in your training plan.
  • Encourage collaboration and teamwork without neglecting your responsibilities. Scientific collaboration outside the objectives of the SoilEvoEco lab is something to be developed outside working hours.
  • Train in data production, analysis, interpretation, and communication of results.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook, protocols, and shared folders to enable reproducibility and transparency.
  • Assist in training students and visitors, for which you will receive recognition.
  • Participate in conferences and courses annually.
  • Participate in and be proactive with scientific outreach.
  • Attend meetings and be proactive regarding team organization and communication. Keep the PIs informed of progress through established channels (open-door policy, CC in email, and meeting calendar).
  • We rely on a system of trust and responsibility.
  • Presence is preferred, but it depends on the organization and responsibilities. Attendance at meetings and seminars is mandatory.
  • Flexibility in personal situations and also with specific events (deadlines, project requests, justifications, experiments, fieldwork).
  • Fieldwork/Vacations: Communication in advance.
  • Encourage collaboration among team members.
  • Clarify authorship from the very beginning.
  • Authorship requires participation in three phases:
  1. Design, data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation
  2. Manuscript writing or review
  3. Approval and responsibility for the content.
